More Info:
Idag marks a triumphant, full-circle electric rebirth for Magnus Pelander’s enigmatic Swedish outfit. Arriving after the sprawling, monolithic doom of 2016's Nucleus and Pelander’s stark, completely stripped-down 2020 acoustic detour Black Metal, this record reconnects directly with the warm, vintage proto-metal alchemy of Witchcraft’s legendary early 2000s catalog. Adorned with John Bauer-inspired fairy tale artwork, the sonic presentation is drenched in rich, uncompressed analog warmth, prioritizing live-room naturalism over sterile modern digital crunch. Pelander anchors the record with fuzzy, blues-steeped Pentagram and Black Sabbath riffing, tube-saturated Gibson SG chime, and hypnotic, dynamic tempo shifts that breathe like vintage 1970s tape reels. The rhythm section lays down loose, swinging grooves that recall classic Jethro Tull and Sir Lord Baltimore, leaving ample room for eerie psych-folk interludes, mournful minor-key acoustic flourishes, and Pelander’s signature weathered, soulful vocal delivery. Sounding mystical, organic, and refreshingly patient, Idag captures Witchcraft shedding the oppressive weight of their heaviest eras to craft an authentic, timeless masterclass in Nordic heavy rock.
