Drift is a pivotal transition point for progressive metalcore outfit ERRA, marking the debut of former Texas in July frontman J.T. Tollas on unclean vocals alongside founding architect Jesse Cash. Moving away from the relentless, dense technical deathcore leanings of Augment, the record embraces an airy, aquatic sonic palette that balances intricate complexity with spacious, lush atmosphere. Musically, as with every Erra release it is built around Cash’s distinctive guitar work. Shimmering tap-leads, clean chord extensions, and neo-classical flair are woven seamlessly into syncopated, drop-tuned groove riffs and polyrhythmic percussion. The dynamic vocal contrast between Tollas’ punchy, mid-range growls and Cash’s soaring, falsetto-laced clean hooks gives tracks like "Luminescent," "Skyline," and the title track an ambient, almost hypnotic dreaminess, making Drift sound simultaneously razor-sharp, heavy, and weightlessly melodic.
