More Info:
Composed by Ben Babbitt for Cardboard Computer’s magical realist episodic epic and pressed to a 2xLP set by iam8bit, the Kentucky Route Zero: Original Soundtrack is an arresting, spectral synthesis of subterranean ambient drone, haunting American folk traditions, and surreal dream pop. The record sounds like tuning an old AM transistor radio late at night on a forgotten back road, drifting between hypnotic low-frequency analog synthesizer hums, warm acoustic tape hiss, and lonely Appalachian bluegrass hymns performed by The Bedquilt Ramblers (such as "Long Journey Home" and "This World Is Not My Home"). Babbitt brilliantly weaves fragile, reverent acoustic instrumentation full of banjo, upright bass, fiddle, and solemn close-mic harmonies directly into modular electronic soundscapes, vintage phone-operator hold tones, and shimmering synth-pop showstoppers like "Too Late to Love You" (sung by the android Junebug). The result is deeply atmospheric, elegiac, and cinematic, sounding simultaneously rooted in rural Americana history and floating in an ethereal, time-slipped purgatory of memory, debt, and human connection.
