Following up Exile on Main St. was always an impossible task, and on 1973’s Goats Head Soup, the Stones didn't even try to replicate that manic double-album energy—they decamped to Jamaica and let the tropical heat, drug haze, and exhaustion slow everything down to a murky, mid-tempo groove. It’s easily one of their swampiest and weirdest records. Instead of lean rock-and-roll sprints, the album leans heavily into dark, wah wah drenched funk ("Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)"), greasy clavinet jams, and sluggish voodoo blues, offset by some of their prettiest, most fragile acoustic ballads, like "Angie" and "Winter." Mick Taylor’s fluid, lyrical guitar solos are front and center, floating smoothly over Mick Jagger’s vocals and Billy Preston's soulful piano. It doesn't have the untouchable swagger of their late'60s peak; instead, it sounds like a tired, hedonistic rock band nursing a massive hangover in the Caribbean, making for a loose, atmospheric record that has aged far better than critics first gave it credit for.
