More Info:
The Number Ones is an infectious, breakneck clinic in three-chord melodic perfection. Composed of seasoned veterans from Dublin’s fertile punk and hardcore scene, including members of bands like The Spies and Cian Nugent's backing group, the four-piece channeled their underground chops into hyper-catchy, razor-sharp 1970s pub rock and classic UK power pop, drawing immediate, glowing comparisons to The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, Nick Lowe, and The Nerves. Tracking live with engineer and producer Daniel Fox of Girl Band, the sonic presentation is punchy, immediate, and refreshingly devoid of modern gloss: guitars buzz with chime and tube overdrive, basslines bounce with melodic swagger, and snappy snare transients propel the tracks forward at breakneck speed. Clocking in at ten songs in under twenty-five minutes, the record wastes zero motion, firing off breathless, hook-stuffed anthems like "Boy," "Sharon Shouldn't," "Heartbeating," and "Turn It Around." What makes the album truly soar are the dual lead vocal deliveries and infectious gang harmonies, layering cheeky romantic frustration and adolescent angst over pure, irresistible bubblegum-punk melodies. Pressed cleanly to vinyl with bright, dynamic midrange bite and tight low-end punch, this debut stands as one of the finest, most exuberant modern power-pop full-lengths of the 2010s.
