Released in 2019 on Verve Forecast as the opening chapter of a conceptual trilogy, The Invisible Light: Acoustic Space finds T-Bone Burnett teaming up with longtime sonic cohorts Jay Bellerose and Keefus Ciancia to create a dystopian, cyber-tribal fever dream. It’s an eerie collision of acoustic bone and wood resonance and glitchy, analog noise, meditating on modern surveillance, media hypnosis, and digital overload. Bellerose lays down hypnotic, polyrhythmic wooden percussion hollow log hits, rattle shuffles, and thudding bass drums that feel prehistoric while Ciancia carpets the mix with subterranean drone pulses, fractured modular synths, and haunting electronic distortions. Over it all, Burnett delivers half spoken, half whispered cautionary prophecies in a weathered, world-weary gravel that sounds like an Old Testament preacher wandering through a Blade Runner neon wasteland. It’s dark, hypnotic, and deeply unsettling record and more of an avant-garde soundscape that demands full immersion in the dark.
