The Rising Tide was the ambitious, operatic swan song of Sunny Day Real Estate’s second era, completing their dramatic evolution from 1990s emo pioneers into grand, art rock world builders. Produced by Lou Giordano at Dreamland Studios, the record moves far beyond the raw, basement-born post-hardcore catharsis of Diary, replacing angular angst with sweeping cinematic grandeur, baroque prog-rock ambition, and intricate, multi-layered arrangements. Jeremy Enigk's vocal performance reaches an almost spiritual peak, alternating between tender, breathy falsettos and soaring, resonant cries wrapped in layers of grand piano, Mellotron, and lush string accompaniments. Dan Hoerner’s guitars trade crunchy punk chords for dense, crystalline arpeggios, majestic crescendos, and Eastern tinged acoustic phrasing, all anchored by William Goldsmith’s thunderous, nuanced drumming.
