Sin represents an immense, conceptually punishing milestone from Bozeman, MO instrumental post-rock collective Ranges. Following sprawling narrative monuments like Babel and Cardinal Winds, the group plunges headlong into an apocalyptic, thematic examination of human transgression, judgment, and spiritual devastation. Rather than adhering strictly to traditional quiet-loud crescendos, the quartet constructs monolithic sound walls where crushing, doom-laden post-metal distortion collides with glacial, atmospheric post-rock beauty. Low-tuned baritone guitars churn alongside thunderous, slow-motion drum tracking that lands with volcanic weight, while shimmering tremolo melodies and haunting synth drones carve out expansive, desolate space in the stereo spectrum. The compositions move with deliberate, ceremonial patience, gradually stacking dynamic layers until dense, subterranean low-end rumbles consume the field like a seismic event. Mastered specifically for vinyl with vast stereophonic headroom, the physical pressing lets the natural room reverberation, cymbal decay, and heavy analog pedal saturation breathe with ferocious, room-shaking authority, cementing Sin as a devastating, masterfully executed epic in heavy contemporary instrumental rock.
