Created in the wake of intense personal turmoil, grief, and addiction following the massive success of The Downward Spiral, this record serves as its conceptual companion shifting from a descent into destruction to a desperate, fractured attempt to pick up the pieces. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and certified double platinum, the album initially polarized critics for its immense length and dense arrangements. Over time, it has been widely reappraised as Reznor’s compositional magnum opus and a defining high-water mark of late-'90s experimental rock. This is my favorite album ever created.
