Captured catches Journey right at the pivot point between raw, powerhouse arena rock and the polished synth pop rock mega stardom that followed with Escape. This double live LP is the final document of founding keyboardist Gregg Rolie, and it gives the songs a hungry, road-tested bite that their studio counterparts rarely matched. Steve Perry’s soaring, effortless pipes are at their absolute peak here, floating cleanly above the roar of the crowd on barnburners like "Where Were You" and anthems like "Any Way You Want It" and "Lights." But what really drives the record is the pure rock chemistry underneath: Neal Schon’s guitar is monstrous and unrestrained, tearing off searing, blues drenched solos, while Steve Smith’s relentless drumming and Ross Valory’s driving bass lock in tight. Capped off by the lone studio track "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)," it’s a sweaty, high energy live document of an arena titan hitting on all cylinders before synthesizers took over the wheel.
