More Info:
Don't let the "Soundtrack" tag fool you outside of a blistering, feedback-scorched live cut of "Hear My Train A Comin'" from Berkeley, almost nothing here was actually played in that bizarre Maui concert movie. Put together in 1971 by Eddie Kramer, John Jansen, and Mitch Mitchell after Jimi passed, this is really the essential second chapter to The Cry of Love, pulling together unfinished master tracks intended for his planned double album First Rays of the New Rising Sun. It catches Hendrix pushing past the Experience's raw power-trio crunch into a richer, rhythm-heavy pocket alongside Mitchell and Billy Cox. You get absolute monsters like "Dolly Dagger" and "Earth Blues" running on greasy funk grooves and sharp wah-wah bites, right alongside the jaw-dropping cosmic drift of "Pali Gap" one of the most lyrical, fluid instrumental jams he ever cut to tape and the spacey, overdriven fuzz workout of "Star Spangled Banner." It’s an essential snapshot of a legend branching out into funk, soul, and interstellar studio experimentation, capturing an artist who was still leveling up right to the end.
