More Info:
Meet The Moonlight marks Jack Johnson’s eighth studio album and stands as his most artistically nuanced, sonically adventurous work in well over a decade. Seeking to disrupt his familiar recording habits, Johnson enlisted acclaimed producer and multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills (known for revitalizing albums by Alabama Shakes, Fiona Apple, and Perfume Genius), tracking between Sound City Studios in Los Angeles and Johnson’s solar-powered Mango Tree studio in Hawaii. Mills pulls Johnson outside his breezy campfire comfort zone, trading straightforward strummed rhythms for intricate, multi-layered fretwork, unusual tunings, and delicate ambient textures. Warm acoustic guitars are laced with Mills’ signature touches: vintage Moog synthesizers, chamberlin flourishes, gentle vibraphone hits, and pitch-shifted tape echoes that drift peacefully into the margins. Standout tracks like "One Step Ahead," "Costume Party," and the hypnotic title track balance Johnson's trademark conversational ease with subtle, complex chord voicings and deep philosophical ruminations on connection, digital isolation, and social division. Mixed with vast stereophonic headroom and pressed to 180-gram vinyl, the analog warmth allows every nylon-string scrape, wooden percussion tap, and whispered vocal inflection to breathe with late-night, organic intimacy.
