Frankie Rose’s Interstellar marks a pivotal departure from the lo-fi, garage surf scuzz of her earlier work with Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, and Dum Dum Girls in favor of a shimmering, widescreen hybrid of dream pop, synthwave, and 1980s post-punk. Propelled by crisp, motorik drum programming and buoyant, melodic basslines, the record wraps itself in velvet-thick reverb, arpeggiated guitars, and icy, celestial analog synths reminiscent of Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and vintage 4AD records.
