More Info:

Originally issued by Capitol Records in 1964 to cash in on the mid-1960s monster craze sparked by The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Bobby Pickett’s "Monster Mash," Monster Dance Party (subtitled Riboflavin-Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood) stands as a garage-rock and surf-pop novelty masterpiece. Brought back to life on splattered wax via Real Gone Music, the record pairs Los Angeles radio DJ Don Hinson’s campy, spot-on Bela Lugosi Dracula impression with the sonic pedigree of surf producer and Brian Wilson collaborator Gary Usher.

Rather than cheap throwaway backing tracks, Usher rounded up top-tier Hollywood studio ringers to lay down authentic, razor-sharp 1960s teen dance grooves. The arrangements burst with twangy, spring-reverb-soaked Fender Stratocaster lines, growling baritone sax riffs, rolling frat-rock snare beats, and bubbling B-movie sound effects. Tracks like "Monster Jerk," "Werewolf Watusi," and "Monster Surf Stomp" effortlessly splice monster shtick with the authentic Pacific Coast stomp of The Ventures and The Marketts. The album's crowning achievement remains "Riboflavin-Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood," an infectious cut whose frantic beat and darkly humorous lyricism later became a foundational anthem of the early 1980s Los Angeles deathrock scene when 45 Grave turned it into a goth-punk staple. Fun, energetic, and soaked in tube-driven vintage California tone, the record is the ultimate mid-century Halloween artifact running on pure teenage dance-craze adrenaline.
