More Info:
Music for The Starling Girl documents the solo feature film scoring debut of Lord Huron mastermind Ben Schneider. Composed for Laurel Parmet’s acclaimed 2023 coming-of-age drama set within a fundamentalist Christian community in rural Kentucky, the score showcases Schneider’s uncanny gift for mythic Americana, romantic yearning, and pastoral melancholy. Tracking at his vintage-equipped Whispering Pines studio in Los Angeles alongside key Lord Huron collaborators, Schneider weaves a delicate sonic tapestry built around fingerpicked acoustic guitars, warm analog tape saturation, mournful lap steel sighs, and resonant pump organ swells. Rather than relying on heavy orchestration, the arrangements prioritize negative space and atmospheric stillness, echoing the claustrophobia and forbidden awakening of the film's protagonist. Haunting instrumental vignettes like "Stained Glass," "Tunnel of Trees," and "Jem's Theme" drift between sacred choral reverberation and dusty country-folk, while original songs like the sweeping, bittersweet standout "Ace Up My Sleeve" deliver the widescreen emotional resonance fans cherish across Lord Huron’s catalog. Mastered with generous dynamic headroom and pressed to vinyl with pristine acoustic clarity, the analog cut lets the wooden timbre of the fretboards, delicate room mic decay, and gentle tape flutter breathe with captivating, devotional intimacy.
